Head of Middle School - Augusta Preparatory Day School

  • Job Description:
    Overview: Augusta Preparatory Day School seeks a passionate and energetic Head of Middle School to lead its Middle School community of approx. 135 students in grades five through eight and more than 14 faculty and staff in the pursuit of educational excellence through its holistic mission. The Head of Middle School will lead faculty, inspire students, and collaborate with other administrators to incorporate 21st Century skills and innovation into its already stellar academic programs. The new Middle School Head will be an important leader in realizing the strategic vision outlined by school leadership and will report directly to the Head of School beginning on July 1, 2018, as a full time exempt employee.

    Primary Responsibilities:
    ● Work with the Head of School and the Administrative Team to develop, update, and implement the School’s strategic vision and to strengthen the school community across divisions.
    ● Lead and inspire Middle School faculty to maintain high academic standards, employ collaboration & reflection in their teaching and learning, and to develop important 21st Century skills.
    ● Retain and recruit outstanding, diverse teachers who understand and embrace technology as a tool for effective learning; provide opportunities and encourage faculty to seek professional growth and development; define & implement meaningful evaluation tools for faculty; and plan productive in-service experiences where teachers learn from one another.
    ● Nurture a stimulating, disciplined Middle School learning environment with an appropriate balance of challenge, support, and differentiation.
    ● Oversee the many operational details of the Middle School, ensuring a smoothly run division in terms of scheduling, curriculum oversight and development, advisory programs, and extra- and co-curricular programs.
    ● Encourage students to realize their academic, athletic, artistic, and leadership potential, and to take responsibility for their actions while actively engaging in their learning.

    Qualifications:
    ● Experience in and an understanding of independent school education is an advantage.
    ● Enjoy spending time with teachers, students, and families in and outside of the classroom.
    ● Relate comfortably and, when necessary, firmly with students and parents.
    ● Classroom experience and an understanding of the importance of strong academics balanced by co-curricular and extracurricular participation for both teachers and students is an advantage.
    ● Be an inspirational, innovative, and energetic leader who practices collaboration and understands the importance of strong decision making.
    ● Have strong written and oral communication skills.
    ● Possess proven skills in administration and organization.
    ● Be confident and comfortable in dealing with issues related to civility, integrity, and individual responsibility as part of Augusta Prep’s shared values and leadership of the Middle School.
    ● Having a Master’s degree or equivalent is an advantage.
