Head of Early Childhood and Elementary Education - Almaden Country Day School

  • Job Description:
    Head of Elementary & Early Childhood Education (ECE)
    FTE: Full-time, 12-month senior administrative position
    Begins: July 1, 2018
    Reports to: Head of School

    Primary Responsibilities – Elementary + ECE Leadership:
    ● Spend time in all classrooms to understand needs of students, teachers, and curriculum
     ● Manage, evaluate, & continually improve all PK-5 programs
    ● Supervise & evaluate elementary + ECE faculty, Student Life Coordinators, Apple Orchard & Apple Tree personnel, other faculty/staff as assigned
    ● Mentor new teachers ● Develop & implement new instructional programs (e.g. extending Mission Skills to PK-5)
    ● Oversee implementation and evaluation of school-wide initiatives in the PK-5 grades (e.g. challenging high achieving students, cultural competency, implementing/integrating Mission Skills, etc.)
    ● Plan and lead faculty meetings, Minimum Tuesdays, department meetings and in-services, with support of fellow instructional leaders
    ● Identify outside professionals to support initiatives and PD
    ● Create annual faculty meeting schedule
    ● Manage student behavioral issues; serve as liaison between teachers, students, and parents to resolve social concerns
    ● Set and maintain expectations for teacher communication regarding student academic and social progress
    ● Co-coordinate MAP testing with Head for Middle School
    ● Expand implementation of Mission Skills program into PK-5 grades; take turns with MS head attending annual conference
    ● Monitor PK-5 class budgets and approve expenditures
    ● Approve PK-5 professional development requests within PD budget
    ● Prepare course schedule in conjunction with Head of Middle School
    ● Support The Learning Center as needed, including admissions decisions
    ● Support Coloma and Science Camp field trips, as needed and sometimes including partial/full attendance
    ● Attend and emcee all PK-5 performances, including evening shows
    ● Attend Advancement team’s New Family Summer Playdates
    ● Join Advancement team members on preschool visits, as needed
    ● Other duties as assigned

    General Administrative Responsibilities:
    ● Set up and maintain PK-5 budgets
    ● Help prepare PK-8 duty and carpool schedules
    ● Attend Tech Committee and Admissions Committee meetings General Administrative Responsibilities, cont’d
    ● Maintain a visible presence in PK-5 classrooms, special grade-level and classroom activities, and all school-wide events; as often as possible, greet families at morning and afternoon carpool
    ● Support admin team in all school-wide events, attending and assisting with setup and cleanup: Food Truck Friday, Fun Run, Thanksgiving Feast, open houses, Sports Day, ”Mixer,” ASSETS, PSA meetings, back-to-school nights, parent education events, graduation, etc. as well as providing support for middle school events * Note that most of these are evening and weekend activities
    ● Collaborate with Head of Middle School to produce newsletter each trimester
    ● Other duties as assigned

    Qualifications – Required:
    ● At least 5 years’ teaching experience (elementary experience required)
    ● Strong communication skills, especially during conflict resolution
    ● Ability to make difficult decisions and follow through
    ● Prior experience leading/supervising adults in a school setting
    ● Strong work ethic and availability to fulfill regular evening and weekend duties
    ● Commitment to teamwork and collegiality; ability to work closely with others in a sustained, high-stress environment
    ● Initiative and resourcefulness; constantly seeking ways to improve teaching, learning, school operations and the student/parent experience
    ● Strong grasp of elementary and/or ECE school pedagogy; familiarity and demonstrated experience with the PK-5 learner
    ● Ability to maintain calm under pressure; strong conflict resolution skills
    ● Solutions-oriented approach; creative problem solver
    ● Can-do attitude and willingness to pitch in well beyond immediate responsibilities
    ● Vision for the direction of the ECE & elementary school, & for ACDS as an institution
    ● Commitment to the notion that at ACDS, “Every day is an open house”

    Qualifications – Desired:
    ● Fluency with trends in teaching/learning: project-based learning, mindfulness, socio-emotional learning, design thinking, cultural competency, etc.
    ● Knowledge of Bridges Math, progressive models of education, maker movement
    ● Knowledge of current trends in student assessment and faculty evaluation
    ● Knowledge of issues concerning parents; understanding of parents and parenting
    ● Graduate degree in educational leadership, curriculum and instruction, or other relevant field of study
