Curriculum

“The readings, classes and discussions were all excellent. The Summer Institute is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity with a wonderful group of smart, curious, ambitious teachers. I would highly recommend it to any early career teacher who wants to study teaching and learning, diversity, and enacting school change.” Ruthie Hansen, SI ‘09, University of Chicago Laboratory Schools, IL

General Session

Participants in the Summer Institute benefit from knowledgeable professors, guest authors and nationally renowned educators who deepen understanding on topics such as improving teaching and learning, understanding diversity and multiculturalism and appreciating organizational change in schools. These large presentations cover broad areas of interest for all educators.

Discussion Groups

Students gather in small groups to discuss and uncover ways to apply what they glean from the presentations. The groups are regularly changed to enable each individual to interact with and learn from every other cohort member at one point or another during the two weeks of study.

Curriculum Groups

Students in the program join other participants from the same curricular disciplines for daily classes with master teachers. These groups are formed around grade levels and areas of teaching including English, mathematics, science, history, languages, the arts and elementary education. The participants focus on curriculum, assessment and teaching methodology.
