Beyond the Classroom
"This experience is hard to put into words. It was awe inspiring and invigorating and fun-- and none of these adjectives suffice. It was the closest thing to a true sabbatical I will probably ever have." James Kubacki, HDS '10, East Side Catholic School, WA
The Klingenstein Heads program takes place in a learning environment that offers a wealth of intellectual, cultural and recreational opportunities 24 hours a day. New York City has something for everyone.
The Heads program is thoughtfully planned to offer a challenging academic experience that also allows for building strong and meaningful collegial connections, the kind that often last a lifetime. In addition to the coursework and late night discussions fueled by new ideas, approaches and perspectives, the Heads of Schools Program integrates extracurricular activities that enrich a demanding classroom schedule. Heads visit several different types of local schools-- including charter, public and independent-- to gain exposure to multiple educational styles and structures.
Several group dinners allow for socializing and interaction throughout. An evening at a Broadway show provides a taste of the very best of New York culture and allows a welcome break from reflections and academic work. A scheduled docent-led tour of the Metropolitan Museum of Art is a highlight of many heads’ extracurricular activities. And every day is an opportunity to soak in some of the vibrant culture of New York with a walk through Central Park and the nearby neighborhoods to Columbia University.
