Master’s Degree Program for Independent School Leadership
Full Year

(Academic year - Private School Leadership)

The MA (32 points) or Ed.M. (60 points) in Education Leadership, with a concentration in Private School Leadership is designed to enhance students' knowledge, skills, values, and practical experience so they can achieve their potential as leaders within independent schools. While many students complete the degree during the academic year, they may also opt to take a somewhat lighter load during the year and complete point requirements in the preceding or following summer. The core curriculum is complemented with electives from Teachers College and/or other schools at Columbia University. Within the context of their coursework, students experience integrative projects and related fieldwork. The program provides a strong foundation for leadership positions in independent schools.

Private or charter school teachers or administrators with at least three years of teaching experience and a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university are eligible to apply.

Master’s Degree Program for Independent School Leadership
Two Summers

(Summer intensive - Leadership Academy)

Designed for teachers and administrators who are endorsed by their Heads of School as strong educational leaders and who choose not to leave their jobs for an academic year, the Leadership Academy offers the same degree options (MA and Ed. M. in Education Leadership, with a concentration in Private School Leadership) as the PSL Program (see above). Rigorous study, collaborative projects, and practica in administration are hallmarks of the program. Unlike the Private School Leadership Program, the Leadership Academy curriculum is entirely prescribed. Participants attend intensive six-week sessions in New York City for two consecutive summers and during the year continue their work by engaging in special projects tied to their host schools. The program of study is completed over 18 months.

Independent or charter school educators with 3 years of teaching experience and a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university are eligible to apply. Leadership Academy students must be recommended by the Heads of their sponsoring schools. Generous scholarship aid is available.
