2003-2004 Private School Leadership Students
Will Bladt graduated from Miami University (OH) in1993 with a degree focus in Environmental Science. After doing environmental education for a nonprofit aboard their research vessel, he started teaching 3-8 science at The Pennfield School in Portsmouth, RI. In 1996, he joined the faculty of The Park School in Brookline, MA, teaching middle school science. California beckoned in 2000, where Will became the Middle School Director at Saklan Valley School in Moraga, while teaching PS-8 science. He loves sports, traveling abroad, and snowboards as a volunteer on the National Ski Patrol in his spare time. In the future, he plans to become a Head of School.
Adriana Casas graduated from Psychology at Universidad de Los Andes in Bogota, Colombia. She has been involved in education since the foundation of a private K-12 bilingual school ten years ago. There she began as a Kindergarten English and Math teacher, later moved to teaching more subjects and grades and eventually became the K-3 Coordinator and Teacher Trainer at this and other independent schools and child-care centers in Bogota. She hopes someday to open a teacher-training center to address the needs of teachers and schools from all over Colombia.
Erika Hunter was graduated from Wesleyan University in May 1995 with a degree in biology. In September of the same year, she began her teaching career as a DeWitt Wallace Teaching Fellow at Poly Prep Country Day School in Brooklyn, NY. She has taught biology, AP Biology, and Forensic Science in her tenure at Poly Prep. In addition, she coached softball and advised the Peer Leadership Program and most recently was a tenth grade dean. Erika hopes to become an Upper School Head and then Head of School in the future.
Jessica Keimowitz graduated from Amherst College in 1995 with a B.A. in History. After a brief stint as a health care consultant, she returned to Amherst College and joined the staff of the admissions office. Two years later Jessica moved to Boston, where she became the college counselor and an U.S. history teacher at the New Jewish High School of Greater Boston. Jessica started NJHS' college counseling program and helped the first three graduating classes prepare for their post-high school options. She also coached the girls' softball team and served as the senior class dean. Last year, Jessica moved to Washington, D.C. with her partner and worked in the development office at a senior service agency. After Teachers College, Jessica plans to move back to the Boston area.
Tara Kelley-Ramirez graduated from the University of California, Davis with a degree in English. She was accepted to the Teach for America program and was placed in New York, where she taught for three years in a public school in Manhattan's District 6. She then moved on to help found Bronx Preparatory Charter School where she has been teaching for the past three years, most recently assuming the role of lead teacher. She hopes to become a school leader some day.
Mary Alice Kolodner graduated with a BA in Biology from the College of Notre Dame of Maryland. After working in research labs for several years, she began her science teaching career at Notre Dame Prep in Baltimore. A native of Long Island, she returned to the area and for four years taught science Cold Spring Harbor High School. After staying home for 11 years to raise four children, Mary Alice returned to teaching science at Friends Academy in Locust Valley, NY. For the last 10 years, Mary Alice has been teaching science, directed the Science Research Program and served as a Head Advisor. When she returns to Friends next year after a sabbatical, she hopes to continue working with new faculty and on evaluation and assessment.
Alison Krampf graduated from Duke University in 1999 with a degree in French and an elementary education teaching certificate. She taught as a second grade assistant at The Shipley School in Bryn Mawr, PA for one year. She then went to work at Springside School as a third grade teacher. Springside is an all-girls, Pre-K-12 school in suburban Philadelphia. She taught third grade for two years and first grade for one year while also helping with the Lower School admissions process. Alison hopes to be a Lower School division head one day.
Gabrielle McHale graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in Art History. She started her teaching career at the Francis W. Parker School, where she also attended school from preK-12. Gabby has taught AP Modern European History, acted as advisor to the Yearbook, coached High School boys tennis and has acted as Co-Director of an evening program for middle school students. Gabby has also spent time working as an assistant to the Upper School Head and Principal at Francis W. Parker. In addition, Gabby's fiancé is teaching Special Education at the Murry Berghtraum School in New York and they plan to marry some time next summer. Some day Gabby hopes to be an Upper School Head and eventually a School Head.
After earning his B.A. and M.Ed. from the University of Virginia, John Murray became Head Coach of their Men's Tennis program. Three years later John began his teaching career at University School in Cleveland, where he taught Biology, coached soccer and tennis, and was a class Dean. After seven years, he moved to Walnut Hill School outside of Boston to teach Biology and be the Head of their Science Department. He is married with two young daughters and hopes to be an Academic Dean some day.
Brian O'Callaghan graduated from Bowdoin College where he majored in History and minored in Psychology. At the beginning of his career, Brian was the Director of Admission at Oratory Preparatory School in Summit, New Jersey, where he also served as an English teacher and coached soccer, basketball and lacrosse. Most recently, Brian was an Associate Director of Admissions, member of the residential staff and lacrosse coach at Milton Academy in Milton, Massachusetts. He hopes to become a Head of School some day.
Erica Poon graduated from Amherst College with degrees in English and Women's and Gender Studies. A week after graduation, she moved to NYC to pursue an M.S. in early childhood/elementary education at Bank Street College of Education. For the last four years, Erica taught 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades at Village Community School, a progressive K-8 school in the West Village. Erica takes every opportunity to travel in the U.S. and abroad. She admits to having an arts and crafts side and enjoys bookbinding and quilting. Theatre is another love.
Mark Reed is a graduate of the University of Houston and has taught at St. John's School in Houston, Texas for the last 13 years. The last six years he has served as Upper School Dean of Students. In addition to his administrative duties, he coaches both basketball and golf. Mark also serves on the board of IBP, a small theater company in Houston. He hopes to become a Head of School some day.
Jenna Rogers was a French and art history major and an All-American runner at Dartmouth College. Upon graduation, she became a teacher in an after-school French program, an assistant college track coach, a mentor, and a co-leader of a girls' activity and discussion group that she and two colleagues developed in a disadvantaged neighborhood in Boston. More recently she was a French teacher, a track and cross country coach, a class advisor, and a dormparent at Suffield Academy in Connecticut. Jenna will miss teaching and coaching this year, but looks forward to spending the year preparing to hold an administrative role in an independent school.
Jabali Sawicki was born and raised in San Francisco. He received his B.A. from Oberlin College in Philosophy and Biology. He began his carrier in education teaching middle school math and science at Summerbridge Louisville and New Orleans. Most recently he taught sixth and seventh grade science for three years at Roxbury Preparatory Charter School in Roxbury Massachusetts. He is the founding principal of Excellence Charter School of Bedford Stuyvesant, an all boys K-8 charter school in Brooklyn, New York. He is committed to improving education for all underserved children in this country.
Gretchen Scharfe graduated from Bowdoin College, where she majored in Sociology and minored in Education. She then returned to her high school alma mater, Governor Dummer Academy in Byfield, MA, where she worked for the Dean of Students Office, while also teaching a section of European History, coaching, and interviewing potential students for Admissions. For the past three years at Governor Dummer, Gretchen was busy teaching US History and American Studies, coaching field hockey and lacrosse, continuing to act as assistant to the Dean of Students, as well as taking part in the residential life program. Gretchen is very committed to boarding school life and hopes to become a Head of School some day.
Matt Sipple hails from Boston originally, but grew up mainly in Portland, OR and Salisbury, CT. He earned a B.A. in Multicultural History at the University of Pittsburgh in 1993, and an M.A. in African History in 1996. Since then, Matt has taught World History at the Isidore Newman School in New Orleans, and worked at the Leysin American School in Switzerland as a teacher and administrator. Administratively, Matt's experience includes being a Residential Life Coordinator, Dean of Students, and Assistant Headmaster. His future goal is to follow in his father's footsteps and become a Head of School some day.
Liz Stoll graduated from Brown University with a degree in biology. After college she spent a year in Israel and then got her first post-college job in clinical cancer research. Eventually, she gave up the research job and found her way to teaching. She taught sixth grade math and science for three years at Cohen Hillel Academy in Marblehead, Massachusetts before receiving a Wexner Fellowship to pursue her graduate studies. After graduating from TC, Liz plans to earn a master's degree in Judaic Studies and she hopes to eventually become the head of a Jewish day school.
Will Webb's independent school career began as a student during five pivotal years at Groton School. Will matriculated to The University of Vermont where he graduated with a degree in English and Economics. Will then returned to his independent school roots as a member of the faculty at The Gunnery in Washington, CT. During his four years at The Gunnery Will taught Public Speaking, Economics and English, coached Football, Hockey and Lacrosse at the Varsity level, ran a boys dorm with his Yellow Labrador Cole and served as the Assistant Dean of Students. Most recently, Will worked at The University of Vermont as a member of the Development Office. Serving as a Head of School in the long term is of great interest to Will.
A graduate and life-long resident of boarding schools, Matt Woodhall is the son of independent school educators, who founded a school. After serving as a teaching intern in Ireland and earning his B.A. in English at Vassar College, he taught English and drama at Avon Old Farms School. Matt, for the past four years, served as Associate Director of Admission at Berkshire School, where he was also a dorm parent and assistant coach for crew. After a few more adventures, he hopes to become a Head of School.
